Principia's Contributions to the RSC
Principia brings a unique and important perspective to the RSC, combining local and global sustainability, experiential learning, and the Christian Science perspective. The Center for Sustainability opened in 2011 to educate, promote, and inspire Principia College’s students, faculty and staff to become more responsible local and global environmental citizens, thereby putting into practice the Golden Rule on an intergenerational scale.
The Center for Sustainability coordinates a variety of programs and opportunities associated with the study and practice of sustainability on campus – and most of these programs are student run. A diverse student body (representing more than 25 countries) is involved in food demonstration projects such as aquaponics and a green roof, in addition to caring for an orchard, apiary and community garden. Students also manage dormitory recycling and composting, and have effectively advocated for bottle filling stations, native landscaping, vegan menu options, and solar charging stations.
The emphasis on project-based learning is supported by challenging curricular and co-curricular offerings, study abroad programs, career-related internships, community service, a Change Maker Speaker Series, an annual Public Affairs Conference, and other student-led events. In every context there are embedded opportunities to reflect on faith-based values as they relate to social and environmental justice, and the essential role our students will play in solving complex challenges that face the human family in the 21st century.
“I feel like living in the most sustainable way possible makes me a better Christian Scientist because it is a living prayer for the world.” ~ Principia College Student (2013)
